Cisco Router & Switch Basics
Hostnames
Overview:
- In Cisco IOS, a hostname is a label assigned to a device to uniquely identify it within a network
- Hostnames are part of a device's configuration and is primarily used for identification and management purposes
- Configuring hostnames makes it easier to reference devices when configuring, troubleshooting, or performing network tasks
- By default, new Cisco router and switches are configured with the default hostname of either 'Router' or 'Switch'
- Best practice is to use descriptive and meaningful hostnames that describe the role, location, or function of the device in the network
- In this lab example, let's demonstrate configuring hostnames on the Cisco devices within the lab topology
